One of the most memorable meals I experienced last year was the 9-course vegan dégustation at Restaurant Locavore in Ubud, Bali. As the name implies, Locavore focuses on ingredients that are sourced locally, with 90% of their ingredients coming from Indonesian farmers. I was fortunate enough to be able to feast on three different occasions (for research!) and would highly recommend this unique presentation of modern Balinese flavors.

The menu changes seasonally and is designed to delight. Service is informative without it feeling like a lecture before each course. Even though the menu says there’ll be 9 dishes, I’m pretty sure we counted closer to 15 different plates. When planning your booking Locavore, allow 5 hours to truly savor the experience.

Edible Cangang

Naming a favorite dish would be like choosing a favorite child but the standouts for me: Sea Cucumber, an artistic stack of cucumber (no sea creatures), kelp, sea grapes and culinary sorcery, languishing on the tongue like a mermaid in the sun, paired with a cucumber infused gin cocktail. Singkong, a cassava root mousseline with 17 tasty condiments, appearing as a delicate display of textural flavor. And Jicama dressed up with flowers and an emulsion. The desserts, carefully curated gems of exotic produce... surinam cherries, passion fruit and mangosteen. The finale, a playful take on petit fours, presented as an Indonesian board game, congklak.

Dietary/allergy restrictions may be accommodated but no requests for other substitutions.

Beverage pairings are available, quite decadent and do enhance the symphony of sensations playing on your palette.
